Why would you show your child the dying corpse of their father in the hospital like that? Of course the kid is traumatized. The mother just throws away entire home cooked meals without eating them... have they not heard of tupperware? Put videos of the dead father on a giant screen in the middle of the house and get drunk? Don't you think that creates an uncomfortable environment for the kid? I can't even get into the main themes of the film because the mother is just doing such an overwhelmingly terrible job of parenting or in any way creating a safe and productive environment for the child. As for how the father died, it looks like the only way he could suffer such extreme injuries by running off a straight road was if he deliberately sped into the treeline.
