In the shadow of Fellow Travelers, another TV miniseries is looking back on 20th century America, this time centered around Muhammad Ali's comeback fight in Atlanta after his draft-dodging hiatus. Dexter Darden shines in that role, stealing the show from heavyweights like Don Cheadle and Samuel L Jackson, whose characters come off as flat and typecast in comparison. Terrance Howard is also fantastic as a gangster from New Jersey with a cool sense of humor and a flowing coiffure. Kevin Hart and Taraji Henson are appropriately cast but also fail to go beyond their usual MOs. The costumes and set design are great. The music and cars are awesome. But the story lacks commensurate luster despite being based on a true story and the characters fail to evoke either empathy or much sympathy, except for Ali and, to an extent, his bodyguard played by Cheadle. Perfect example of style over substance.
