Grace sadly felt really flat and never really got going. Another jaded last-chance detective at the seaside with a broken heart and a hard-ass boss on his case, it's a well-worn trope and there wasn't anything new here. Felt like the pacing was very slow and the clunky direction and setup didn't help at all. Supporting characters didn't offer up much in the way of relief or entertainment. All in all, pretty average, it might satisfy devoted fans of John Simm as he delivers his usual shoe-gazing performance playing his usual washed-up cop role, but I came away disappointed, I expected something much better. For a first installment it was pretty lacklustre. Hopefully it will get better over time, but if this was the best book of the series I wouldn't hold out much hope.
