As Episode 1 of "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters" (2023 release; 10 episodes of about 45 min each) opens, we are on "Skull Island 1973", and a guy holding a mysterious package is being chased by a giant spider. The guy throws the package into the sea and just then a giant crab awakens and fights the spider. We then shift to "Sea of Japan 2013" when amazingly someone retrieves the 1973 package... At this point we are less than 10 minutes into Episode 1. Couple of comments: I am not as such a fan of the Godzilla movies, in fact I've never watched an entire Godzilla from start to finish. Nevertheless I head heard positive things about this mini-series, and simply decided to give it a try. And guess what: based on the initial 3 episodes I've seen to date, I am completely hooked on this show. The opening 10 minutes of Episode 1 are stunning action scenes , but what really got me hooked were the many story lines spanning 60+ years (Japan April 2015, Kazakhstan 1957, The Philippines 1952, Marshall Island 1954, etc.) that are all tied into each other in one way or another. The production set is tops throughout, as are the special effects. Anna Sawai is great as the lead performer. Kurt Russell alert! Russell shows up towards the end of Episode 2. Bottom line: I couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised with this mini-series (so far)! "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters" started airing recently on Apple TV. New episodes are released on Fridays. This mini-series is currently rated 85% Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, and for good reason! If you are in the mood for something "monstrous" or are simply a fan of monster movies, I'd readily suggest you check this out, and draw your own conclusion.
