Many problems with this movie, the first being it was marketed as a comedy when it's a quirky drama a la Little Miss Sunshine. It suffered from an identity crisis. Next, the emotional hits in this movie were swings and a miss. Not earned, so they didn't pack the punch. It wasn't funny enough to be a comedy and it didn't earn the heartfelt drama. The relationships and connections weren't there. Mighty Ducks did it better. Worldly guy gets a pack of misfit kids dumped in his lap and he learns to love them. That's what this movie should have been. Funny and with some heart. Swing and a miss boys, swing and a miss.
