The reviews here are hilariously stupid sometimes. Almost every negative review contains some form of complaint, that there are too many women in the show. And that somehow, that makes it woke. Maybe I am just too old, but why would I give a damn what gender anyone is if the characters are well written and relatable? Anyway, let's get into my own review of the first two episodes and why I believe, this could be the first attempt at Star Trek TV since the 90s, that is actually Star Trek, by looking at the last two misconstrued tries: Discovery was less than mediocre. It was a drawn-out, forgettable story with one or two decently interesting characters, too much tear-jerking and you could have taken away the Star Trek theme and it still would have been just that. It didn't feel like Star Trek at all. Picard... Well, Picard was just fan-service that turned out to be pure bait. I love Patrick Stewart, but I have rarely been so bored and also infuriated by a television program. And don't get me started on the writing and the hilariously timed monologues, like what the... Also, where has all the color gone that made Star Trek so unique? Why does every show have to be nitty and gritty? Anyway, after watching it, I decided: If this is gonna be Star Trek, then Star Trek should die. But then Strange New Worlds comes along and the first two episodes actually gave me that tingly little feeling that Star Trek did when I was younger. There's this feeling of exploration, where after the first episode, I was already interested in what would come next. Not because of some over-arching grand-scale story, but because it actually made me feel excited to go along on a journey. The (seemingly) episodic format makes you say "uuuh, I wonder what next episode will be like!". There are moral dilemmas, ethical questions and diplomatic solutions. There are captains logs, some light crew hijinks and weird alien concepts. And everything is rounded out by some good writing with interesting dialogue and well-paced structure. The characters seem unique with their own personalities, traits and motivations, but it is a bit early to judge on that. Yes, there are some moral questions being asked and yes, there are people that somehow will be offended by how Pike and his crew navigate those or they will call it grandstanding. But imo, the magic of Star Trek was always that you can ask yourself these same questions and how you would handle them. Just because you might disagree, doesn't mean it's a bad show. In any case: These first two episodes, to me, are pure joy, and pure Star Trek. 9/10 so far, can't wait for more.
