If something major happens in your childhood ... it would almost be a wonder if you turned out somewhat normal. On the other hand, if you cast a kid and give him cliche lines he is prone to fail - it may really get some viewers to turn off before this even starts. Saying the obvious out loud ... never a good idea, especially in a horror movie, where you could and should act, rather than tell the audience what they can see with their eyes too (no offense to anyone who can't see of course). Still there are some genuine moments after that - and you may find enough humor and horror in this. Not to mention that our main character is somewhat likeable - does not seem to be the brightest all of the time ... but hey it's a horror movie and we established that sense is not something you should be expecting here. If you suspend your disbelief enough, there is good entertainment in this to be had.
