I was really looking forward to the reboot of the wonderful original, and went into watching the first episode looking for a new spin on a "now-old" classic. The premise is great - an African American family going through the same time period as the white family from the original, but with some different (and, in a lot of ways, similar) points of view. There seems to be a wealth of potentially "Wonder-ful" new stories to explore with this new perspective in the future. However... A very bland pilot. Uninspired. Flat. Over the top. No "charm." Not only boring, but just "weak" in characters and story. As others have already said, yes, there is this overarching sense of early 21st Century "Wokeness" throughout, but remember, this story is being told in flashback by its now 60+ year old storyteller, as in the original. That is his point of view from 53 years on, in the current time, and is part of the story. Regardless of one's political view of "Woke," this pilot is just weak. Hope the future can turn this around.
