This review will be one of the easiest I've done in a while. "Werewolves" is one of the most fun theatrical experiences I've had all year. I expected this film to be fun, but I didn't know I would love it, and I want to explain why. To start, I appreciate how they handled the narrative. The setup is straightforward: a supermoon turned billions of people into werewolves a year ago. Now, that supermoon is back, and Frank Grillo has to find a way to stop the transformation. This simple premise results in the film developing the universe and how the werewolves operate in ways that never add convolution. I'm happy for Frank Grillo since this is one of his best films in a long time. I'm not a die-hard Grillo fan, but the two most recent films I've seen him in - "Shattered" and "Lights Out" - were underwhelming. Grillo does captivating work as Wesley Marshall, one of the two scientists who race to find a cure while surviving the night, the other being Dr. Amy Chen, compellingly played by Katrina Law. Arguably, the star of the show is the practical effects. The costume and makeup departments nailed the design of the werewolves and made them more terrifying than if they were composed using VFX. They used visual effects for the human-to-werewolf transformations, but once the victims became the predators, the practical effects were on glorious display. For the rest of the positives, it has fun action, hilarious lines of dialogue, and slick pacing, keeping me engaged, invested, and on the edge of my seat. Yes, there are some dumb character decisions, but that is my only complaint with this movie, and it doesn't ruin it at all. "Werewolves" is one of the year's biggest surprises. I knew it would be entertaining, but I was unprepared for how the film offered more than that. It will likely stand the test of time as a cult classic and get a sequel. It's a tragedy that the film didn't make that much opening weekend, so check it out before it leaves theaters. Technically, the practical effects, the VFX, and the performances make the technical score a 9/10. For the enjoyment score, I'm genuinely confused about why the film stands at a 5.2/10 IMDb rating and a 50% Rotten Tomatoes score at the time of writing. I don't feel this way because the enjoyment score is a 9/10. It's worth watching in theaters and is a worthy addition to your film collection at home!
